Description

Short title: Attorney General of the Duchy of Lancaster v Wolley.

Plaintiffs: Attorney General of the Duchy of Lancaster.

Defendants: [Anthony] Wolley and others.

Documents: depositions concerning chantry lands in Matlock, Derbyshire.

Taken 18 Eliz.

Deponents for plaintiffs: William Mather of Matlock, aged 70, deposed that he had lived in Matlock parish for 33 years. Denied that a number of listed houses and their lands had been known as church or chantry lands. 35 years ago there was a priest at Matlock called Henry Northedge. lucy Smedley had bulit a house about 40 years ago in which the priest had lodged until 32 years ago. This was said by some to be a chantry house; John Dayne of Plestow Grene in parish of Crich, aged 46; Henry Bowhe of Matlock, aged 60 years and more.

Deponents for defendants: Thomas Walker of Matlock, aged 66, deposed that the rents of the lands had been received by the churchwardens and used by the parish for 40 years. 'he hath harde redde a certayne copye or surrender made of the premises by one Roger Robyn als Smyth to the sayd copye holders and others beyring date the thyrtenthe daye of jannarie in the xith yere of the late kynge henry the seventh' [he has heard read a certain copy or surrender made of the premises by one Roger Robyn, alias Smith, to the said copyholders and others bearing date 30 January 11 Hen VII - so 1497]; Humphrey Madder of Matlock, aged 67; James Flint 'of the Steple', aged 59.
