Description

Short title: Wild v Foljambe.

Plaintiffs: Richard Wyld.

Defendants: Godfrey Foljamb.

Documents: depositions concerning Watfeldes [Waterfield] in Wirksworth, Derbyshire.

Taken 16 January, 10 Eliz.

Deponents for plaintiffs: John Reynes of Bonsall, husbandman, aged 50 years or more, whose memory of Watfeldes goes back 30 years [to 1539], deposed that he knew the defendant's father, also called Godfrey Foljamb. Custom of inheritence of copyhold land in Wirksworth manor requires that the wife gets one third of all copyhold land. He was at the court Baron at which Foljamb wanted to be admitted as a tenant but the steward told him that his mother must first have her lands. This court was held 12 years ago; John Eyley of the Leye, aged around 45 years; John Wigley of Middleton, gentleman, aged around 56 years, deposed that he bought wool from James and Elizabeth Hardwick whilst they occupied Watfeldes; James Beighton of Wirksworth, aged around 55 years; Thomas Shawe of Brymmington, yeoman, aged 60 years or more; James Deyne of Wirksworth, gentleman, aged around 40 years; Reynold Bretland of Chesterfield, gentleman, aged around 57 years.
