Description

Short title: Alsop v Crosse.

Plaintiffs: George Alsop.

Defendants: William Cross and others.

Documents: depositions concerning bequest of lands in Ashbourne by William Alsop who died in the second week of Lent, 1561, Derbyshire.

Taken on 2 August, 5 Eliz.

Deponents for plaintiffs: Henry Frost of Derby, shoemaker, aged 61; John Balydon of Mapleton, aged 40 or more, deposed that he heard Margaret Alsop say that she saw Raufe Cross put 'certen wrytings' in the fire, 'and he said that the burning of those wold be worth a hundreth pounds to some body one day' [certain writings in the fire and he said that the burning of those would be worth £100 to somebody one day]; John Bestow of Ashbourne, aged 24.

Deponents for defendants: Roger Hurt of Ashbourne, aged 53, deposed that 2 attorneys [Nicholas Hurt and Andrew Mylward] were involved in drawing up an additional will giving the lands in Ashbourne to Ellen Cross who took over the land with William Cross 'aboute a yere past' [about a year past]. Elizabeth Alsopp contested saying the lands should pass to her son George Alsopp taking the case to Wirksworth manorial court where lands were found to be chantry land; Thomas Smith of Waterfall, aged 53, deposed that 'William Alsoppe when he was sycke and many tymes afore, sayd that he had rather that [...] the lands were sonken then the Bastard ladd should have theyme' [William Alsopp when he was sick and many times afore, said that he had rather that the lands were sunken than the bastard lad should have them]; Richard Leeche of Throwley, aged 38; Richard Mower of Okeover, aged 44; Nicholas Hurte of Ashbourne, aged 30; Andrew Mylward of Ashbourne, aged 41; John Sherratt of Ashbourne, age 30; Roger Shaftwall of Ashbourne, aged 50; Humphrey Alsopp of Ashbourne, aged 36.
