Description

Short title: Scortred v Barrett.

Plaintiffs: Edward Scortred.

Defendants: Robert Barrett.

Documents: depositions concerning proof of age for Edward Scortred, Wirksworth, Derbyshire.

Deponents for plaintiffs: Henry Cawper of Kirk Ireton, husbandman, aged 60 or thereabouts, deposed that the plaintiff, Edward Scortred was aged 28 years 'at mydsomers last past'. He knows this because he remembers passing the home of Edward Scortred's father on the day of his birth, 'he came by the house when he was born the same morning and his fathr sayd tht he had a man child and he sayd to this deponent tht his landlord sayd tht he shulde have his lande agayne yff he hadd a man childe payinge him his money agayne' [he came by the house when he was born the same morning and his father said that he has a man child and he said to this deponent that his landlord said that he hsould have his land again if he had a man child paying him his money again]; Richard Hill of Iretonwood, husbandman, aged 60 or thereabouts, deposed that he knew Edward Scortred was aged 28 years because 'he being a weyfer by his occupacion dyd weyffe the swedlyng bonds of the sayd Edwards uppon the Saterdaye next after Corpus Chrysti daye wch was xxviii yeres ago last past' [he being a weaver by his occupation did weave the swaddling bands of the said Edwards upon the Saturday next after Corpus Christi day which was 28 years last past]; Thomasin Scortred of the Rakestones at Ireton, widow, aged 60 or thereabouts [two almost identical depositions with differing ages, aged 63 or thereabouts], deposed that she knew Edward Scortred [her son] to be aged 28 years 'at mydsomer last past and further she knoweth hit to be true by other children of her neyghbours tht be of the same age tht he is of and be her one children also' [at midsummer last past and further she knows it to be true by other children of her neighborus that be of the same age that is of and be her own chidlren also]; Sampson Key of Iretonwood, husbandman, aged 39 and more; Thomas Crownlowe of Bigging [Biggin], husbandman, aged 40; John Brenewood of Ireton, husbandman, aged 30; Richard Hichenson of Biging, aged 57; George Lane of Biging, aged 50 or thereabouts.
