Moffat, Dr.Carter: Treasury Solicitor and the General Council of Medical Education and Registration. Moffat fraudulently posed as a doctor and made money from patent medicines widely advertised in the newspapers. He was particularly known for his "electric body belt" which he offered for sale as a cure-all for diseases. He claimed in his advertisements to have supplied this to members of the Royal Family, and to the most prominent people in public life, including Mr.Gladstone. The Vice-Chamberlain of Her Majesty's household informed the Treasury Solicitor of the Royal Family's indignation with Carter Moffat's advertisements and directed that a prosecution be set in motion.
