1902
Osborne Estate Bill. Queen Victoria left her Osborne Estate to the Prince of Wales for life, to be passed on to his sons according to seniority. A proviso to her Will made certain limitations applying to persons born during her lifetime. The case of Prince Edward of York was brought before Counsel for decision, as he was born during the lifetime of the Queen. The Osborne Estate Bill of 1902 ceded the estate to the Prince of Wales on his coronation as Edward VII. It then became part of the public property of the Sovereign. A clause in the Bill stated that part of the estate should be open to the public, and the rest of Osborne House and grounds should be used as a convalescent Hospital for officers of H.M. naval and military forces. Certain lands were reserved for members of the Royal family. The Act when passed was limited in its effect to the lifetime of Edward VII and the Prince of Wales, but on certain conditions its provisions were to have permanent effect.
