Betton, Thomas, Charity (1723). Petition of Appeal from the Scheme of the Charity Commissioners. Thomas Betton left one quarter of the annual interest and profit of his estate to the Ironmongers Company who were his executors, one quarter for charity schools of the Church of England and one half for the redemption of British slaves in Turkey or Barbary. The Commissioners suggested using the latter portion for educational purposes since the original plan no longer applied. The objections of the Ironmongers Co. were met by Counsel, who pointed out that this was not a rigid or unalterable arrangement.
