Lady Hamilton's bequest of portraits to the National Portrait Gallery. Lady Marianne Augusta Hamilton (d.1892) bequeathed 20 portraits in good faith to the Gallery. The portraits were, however, not her permanent property, she having an interest only for her lifetime. The portraits were surrendered by the National Portrait Gallery to the heirs of Sir James Cockburn, Bart. dec.
