In 1551 Edward Grey, fourth Baron Grey of Powis died. In 1584 Henry Vernon of Stokesay, Shropshire, claimed the barony in right of his descent through Elizabeth, daughter of Richard, first Baron Grey of Powis. A rival claimant, Edward Kynaston, challenged Vernon's evidences (some of which are in SP 46/59 Part I) and they were condemned in the Court of Wards in 1585, it being found that Elizabeth was the step-daughter and not the daughter of Richard Grey. See G E C The Complete Peerage Volume VI Part I pp.142-3 (note) and Volume VI Part II Appendix C (pp.697-701).
