Statement of Sir John Melton concerning his claim and title to lands held by Henry [Percy], earl of Northumberland, namely the castle and honour of Cockermouth, and [the manors of] Wigton (Wygton), Branthwaite [in Dean], Papcastle (Popecastre), Loweswater (Lousewater), Dean (Dene), Caldbeck (Caldebeke), Uldale (Uluedale), and Aspatria (Aspatryke), all in Cumberland, and the castle and manor of Langley in Northumberland. He claims that the Percies have broken the terms of an agreement of temp. Richard II, by which they held these lands, and that they should therefore revert to him as the descendant of the next heir.
Includes a chart showing the descent of Melton and his daughter and heir, Dorothy, from Anthony, Lord Lucy, their common ancestor with the Percies.
Datable to between 11 June 1510 (the death of Melton's father) and 26 February 1545 (Melton's own death). May date from c.1536, when Melton was petitioning Thomas Cromwell for title to these properties (Cal. State Papers Domestic, xi, no. 1475).
