Description (What the record is about)
-
This series consists of laboratory notebooks and registers of apparatus of the British Museum (Natural History) Department of Mineralogy.
Pieces making up this series were produced as a result of analytical spectrographic and other work carried out in the Department's chemical laboratory. Members of staff kept their own notebooks in which they recorded data and made notes and sometimes sketches. Some volumes were kept in the laboratory while others were part of the working papers of the scientists concerned.
Most of the notebooks relate to the chemical analysis of minerals, rocks and meteorites in some way, though others record spectrographic and goniometric data. A series of volumes kept by Spencer, Hey and Sweet relate to the alterations made to the register as a result of laboratory analyses. Included in the series are other papers which relate in some way to laboratory equipment, techniques and procedures.
Series held at The Natural History Museum are catalogued more fully in its online catalogue (reference DF MIN/19). Online descriptions of some individual records can also be viewed on Discovery, see DF 19.
