Description
(What the record is about)
-
This series consists of reports of the Joint Planning Staff of the Chiefs of Staff Committee and its successors, the Defence Planning Staff, the Defence Policy Staff and the Defence Operational Planning Staff.
-
Arrangement
(Information about the filing sequence or logical order of the record)
-
Arrangement
Mostly by former file reference.
The organisation of the original bound volumes is occasionally found to differ from the way in which the photocopies were presented and piece numbered; as far as possible piece numbers have been maintained and any discrepancy between the bound volumes and the photocopies is indicated in the list. Joint Planning Staff issued papers in the JP series up to 1963 when it changed to DP to reflect the change to Defence Planning Staff, although the numbering system was continued for both memoranda and notes. This continued up to 1967. In 1968 Defence Planning was divided into Defence Policy Staff and Defence Operational Planning Staff; DPS continued to produce DP memos and notes, while DOPS produced DOP memos and notes. Those for 1968 were bound up and now form part of this series.

Separated material

-
DP and DOP papers were presented to meetings of the Chiefs of Staff and bound with the COS meetings (see DEFE 4). This practice continued from 1969 up to 1974 when no other papers were bound in with the COS minutes. Only occasional DPS and DOPS Secretariat files survive from this period. No complete set of DPS or DOPS papers after 1968 are known to survive.
