Under the Merchant Shipping Act 1894 Customs and Excise undertook the administration of the registration of ships in the ports of Britain. These volumes record the registration of vessels in London port giving ownership, mortgages and a description of each vessel.
Generally these registers are "dead" but occasionally the records of exceptionally long-lived vessels are amended.
Each vessel is allocated a unique port, year and date number in a series beginning at one each year. Usually there are between 150 and 200 entries in a register. In some years odd and even numbers are in separate registers.
