Description

Correspondence, memoranda, reports, petitions, technical papers etc. of the Board of Excise (to 1849), then of the Excise Branch of the Board of Inland Revenue, relating to the powers and many of the activities of the boards and their local offices. The subjects covered include the duties on beer, spirits, paper, tobacco, soap and railway passengers, the licensing of carriages, the judicial activities of the commissioners of the boards, and the boards' establishment and administrative structure. Also included are the papers of William Knight Delany, Solicitor to the Board of Excise (1826-1840), and correspondence with the Treasury (1815-1854).
