Selected registered papers of the Board of Custom dealing with revenue matters such as duties on beer, wines and spirits, tobacco, sugar, tea and coal and administration in ports including custom houses and approval of quays. The records cover England, Scotland, Wales, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands.
CUST 46/500-504 deal with the wreck of the SS Politician off the Hebridean island off Eriskay in 1941 and the looting of its cargo of scotch whisky, the inspiration for Compton Mackenzie's 'Whisky Galore' (1947) and the subsequent Ealing comedy (1949).
