Description (What the record is about)
-
Files in this series relate to disciplinary offences, promotions, leave, superannuation, etc of staff of the Board of Customs. There are also some attendance books and a folder containing papers relating to Patrick O'Connor, a ganger employed by the board. The public execution of his murderers in 1849 aroused the indignation of Charles Dickens in a notable letter to The Times, a copy of which is also with this material.
