Although the origin of the Salaries Committee remains unknown, it must have been formed soon after the Central Criminal Act 1834, which was later superseded by the Administration of Justice Act 1964. The Salaries Committee was set up to deal with matters such as staff appointments, extension of service and to determine the salaries and other allowances payable to officers of the court. The Committee consisted of the Right Honourable the Lord Mayor, the Justices of Her Majesty's High Court of Justice, two Alderman of the City of London, the Recorder of London and the Common Serjeant of London. Meetings were generally held annually with the Lord Mayor of London as chairman and the Clerk of the Court as secretary. Financed by the Corporation of the City of London, the Central Criminal Court, through the Salaries Committee, was responsible for all staff matters. Decisions of the Committee were promulgated by order of the court. By the implementation of the Courts Act 1971, when the staff of the court came within the Lord Chancellor's Department, such orders are no longer issued.
