Administrative / biographical background

In 1940, the Commissioners of Crown Lands appointed a surveyor to act on their behalf at the head of an independent branch within the Commission. The Crown Estate Surveyor (sometimes Crown Surveyor) and his staff undertook structural and architectural surveys of properties on the Crown estate and advised other branches of the office in a professional capacity. Based in London, their work was concentrated on the London estate, and in the home counties. On estates more distant than London, local surveyors were used under contract as required.

The surveyor and his branch were absorbed into the London and Urban Estates Branch in April 1989, where their work continued.
