This series contains eight volumes of establishment books of the Office of Woods, Forests and Land Revenues from 1851 to 1922. All the volumes have two sections as described in more detail below. All (except CRES 21/3 and 4) contain indexes by name.
One section of each book relates mainly to the appointment of staff, with the texts of the related authorities entered in chronological order. This section of the earlier volumes consists mostly of Treasury orders and warrants together with some royal warrants for these appointments, with in addition a number of declarations made by the appointees on first taking up their duties. The first two books, CRES 21/1 and 2, both begin in October 1851, and some of the entries in these two books are duplicated. Certificates of qualification predominate in the later volumes. Occasionally the entries record pension awards, Civil Service examination results, or refer to other establishment matters such as the organisation of the Office, or working conditions.
The other section of each book shows at each opening the salaries or wages paid each quarter to every member of the staff. Each individual's pay is shown separately, beginning with the commissioners and ending with the lesser grades.
