Description

Case report, taken from Star Chamber Reports, BL Harley MS 2143, ed K. J. Kesselring (List and Index Society, Special Series 57, 2018):

[167] Attorney Rex, plaintiff; Uttring, Feckman one of the bailiffs of the city of Lichfield, and diverse others convicted for a rebellious riot committed in the nighttime in pulling open an enclosure and causing the bellman of the city to gather the defendants together with his bell and making proclamation to them to repair to the place; for this imprisoned during the Queen’s pleasure and Feckman the bailiff to be set in the stocks, 500 marks fine and the rest less; Mr Attorney to bring a quo warranto, and to inform against all the justices of peace within four miles of the city and the rest of the chiefest of the city for not suppressing the same. Michaelmas 23 and 24 Eliz I [sic. Fines for this case estreated in November 1561 in E 159/344, "for the great notorious riot and assembly of late committed within the city of Lichfield], fo 144 [note: folio references are to the lost Star Chamber decree and order entry books].
