Description

Short Title: Attorney General v Robinson.

Defendants: The sheriff [Bagot], under-sheriff [Sir John Bowes?], Adderley and Stafford and JPs of the County of Stafford.

County: Staffordshire, Warwickshire.

Subject: failure to attend and halt the great riot at Drayton Bassett; fined £200 each.

Case report, taken from Star Chamber Reports, BL Harley MS 2143, ed K. J. Kesselring (List and Index Society, Special Series 57, 2018):

[121] Bagott, Sheriff of Staffordshire, Sir John Bowes, Adderly and Stafford, justices of peace of the same county, defendants, at the suit of Mr Attorney General, plaintiff, convicted for their negligence and partiality in forbearing the due execution of justice upon the malefactors convicted in this court for the great riot committed at Drayton Bassett in the same county for which offences in not resorting to the place during the continuance of the riot, nor examining, committing to prison or recording of the force upon their own views, by the statute of 22 and 13 Henry IV [sic], they were committed to the Fleet and fined at £200 apiece. [580] Attorney Rex; Harcourt Robinson et al: for a riot at Drayton Bassett in Stafforshire for which some were convicted for that they did not depart after warning given by the justice of peace, and after a privy sessions for that purpose and after a proclamation made according to the statute, and after letters from the Queen and council and yet disobeying all until they were removed by posse comitatus for which great and rebellious riot many were sentenced and committed during the Queen’s pleasure as by the several orders appeareth.
