These are the surviving affidavits of the Court of Common Pleas, retained because they affected title to property or were of material interest, together with related instruments filed with them.
Some of these types of instruments, such as declarations in ejectment and warrants of attorney to confess judgment, are also found in series of their own. There is also some miscellaneous correspondence. Many affidavits were sworn in the country before commissioners.
Among subjects about which they provide information are arbitration, wills, marriages, trade and commerce and local affairs, the topography of particular landscapes, local boundaries, town and parish customs, the work of officers of the court, especially the prothonotaries and filazers, and of town and country attorneys, the working of the postal service and the costs of travel, and even the weather at particular times and places.

- About twenty series of affidavits, from 1715 or later to 1860 or earlier, not considered of any significance, were destroyed under a schedule of 1884. They included: affidavits for the service of writs; of cause of action; of caption of bail; notice for bail to justify; of delivery to turnkey of copy of declaration against prisoners; of service of notice and copy of rules; and many others. Where indexes of those series existed, they too were destroyed, as were any associated documents, such as copies of rules served with affidavits of service of notice and copy of rules.
