The Coal Research Establishment's (CRE) took over some of the functions and records of the Powell Duffryn Research Laboratory in 1946. A member of the National Coal Board was responsible for the CRE, although any work was carried out in conjunction with the Headquarters Divisions. The directors of the divisions ensured that the programmes of research and development supported the board's long term plans. A sponsorship committee was created to maintain links with area management.
