The Central Planning Unit was formed in October 1972, undertaking functions previously the responsibility of the Secretary's Department and reporting directly to a board member. Whilst detailed planning was undertaken by the various National Coal Board Departments, the Central Planning Unit ensured that these activities were co-ordinated and that main issues of policy were brought before the board. In addition, it advised the board on developments in the energy market and the economy at large which had a bearing on the industry's future.
