The main function of the Mining Research and Development Establishment (MRDE) was research into, and testing of, mining equipment and procedures. The MRDE was controlled by a director who ensured that the programmes of research and development supported the National Coal Board's long-term plans. In this context a member of the board had responsibility for the MRDE. Major development committees were also created to maintain links with area management.
