The Bullcroft, Markham Garden Village and Thurnscoe housing schemes were registered in 1915 and 1920 under the Industrial and Provident Societies Acts with the aim of providing working class housing. Funds were raised and used to build houses to let to the employees of Bullcroft Main Colliery Ltd., Markham Main Colliery Ltd. and Hickleton Main Colliery Co. Ltd. In 1937 the three companies were merged in Doncaster Amalgamated Collieries Ltd. In 1952 an agreement between the National Coal Board (NCB), the housing associations and Doncaster Amalgamated Collieries Ltd. transferred control of the associations to the NCB. In 1977 the houses held by the associations were sold to the NCB.
