From 1 January 1950 the former Northern division, which had been formed at nationalisation, was split into two to form the Northern (Northumberland and Cumberland) division and the Durham division. This arrangement ended on 1 January 1964 when the two divisions were amalgamated again to form the Northumberland and Durham division with the Cumberland area having been regrouped with the North-Western division on 1 January 1963.
