This series consists of maps of transferred assets and were drawn up to record the interests in real property which were vested in the National Coal Board as at 1 January 1947.
Most of the printed base maps are ordinary published Ordnance Survey maps, usually from the 1:2,500-scale County Series. The sheets are dissected and backed with linen and the margins (including information about dates of survey, printing and publication) have been trimmed away. The sheet numbers cut from the margins are usually affixed to the back of each sheet. Properties vested in the National Coal Board are shown with coloured manuscript additions. Since it is impossible to date the individual printed sheets or most of the annotations with any precision, the catalogue entries have adopted the date format of [c 1947].
By National Coal Board divisions, each of which is divided into several areas, and then by Ordnance Survey sheet number. The last 36 pieces in the series form a 'miscellaneous' set, partly arranged by the names of the pre-nationalisation coal companies.
The following piece numbers are not used: 2499-2507, 2509-2515, 2517-2522, 2524-2534, 2536-2538, 2540-2545, 2547-2560, 2562-2563, 2565-2567, 2569-2571, 2573-2598, 2600-2609, 2611-2623, 2625-2628, 2630-2631, 2633-2646, 2649-2668.
