Administrative / biographical background

Two categories of Specifications have been issued by the National Coal Board since 1950 and are intended as a supplement to British Standard Specifications. 'Recommended' specifications are intended as a guide for the board's staff in designing installations and ordering equipment while 'Mandatory' specifications ensure that the board's purchases are made in accordance with these specifications. A proportion of these specifications is concerned with consumable stores rather than with mining equipment.
