The Aid Department was formed after the creation of the Commonwealth Office in August 1966, assuming the functions of the Colonial Office Finance Department for matters of budgetary aid and general financial questions relating to the dependent territories, as well as dealing with questions of general development policy for the Commonwealth. From October 1968, these matters were handled in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office by the Financial Policy and Aid Department.
