Lunacy; Poor Law and Paupers.
Correspondence regarding the Bristol Pauper Lunatic Asylum. Letter from Robert Mercer, Clerk to the Guardians of the Clifton Poor Law Union forwarding a copy of a report [not included] made to the guardians regarding lunatics held at the county lunatic asylum in Bristol and the likelihood that they would be cured. Three letters from the Lunacy Commission acknowledging receipt of a copy of the report from Clifton Union, reporting the unfitness of St Peter's Hospital Lunatic Asylum, Bristol and suggesting the Home Office require the authorities to erect or provide a proper asylum.
Also includes two letters from [Daniel Burges], Town Clerk for Bristol, regarding the asylum and the council's intention to fulfil their duties and powers under the Lunatic Asylum Act 1853.
A letter from the Poor Law Board asking whether steps will be taken to ensure local justices comply with the Home Office order requiring they erect or provide a proper asylum at Bristol.
Two letters from John George Shaw, Mayor of Bristol regarding the asylum and reporting that no steps have been taken to provide a new asylum for financial reasons.
Letter from the Treasury enclosing a case to the Attorney and Solicitor General as to compelling the town council of Bristol to provide a pauper lunatic asylum.
