Elgin to Prince Kung. Yüan-ming-yüan was partly and will be completely destroyed in retaliation for ill-treatment of British and French hostages: demands compensation of 300,000 taels to be delivered by 22 Oct 1860. Demands treaty be changed to provide for Anglo-French occupation of Tientsin until war indemnity is paid, that treaty be signed on 23 Oct 1860. Otherwise palace [inside city of Peking] will be destroyed.
