Bruce to Ho Kuei-ch'ing. On 13 Oct 1857 British vessel [Laura] found another British vessel with more than three hundred Chinese soldiers and treasure on board floundering in heavy seas. [Laura] was damaged in rescue operation and incurred extra expensesin delivering soldiers and treasure to Fukien. Apart from half of treasure received according to Western practice, Chinese government still owes [Laura] 3,500 taels for damages and extra expenses. Encl. Extra expenses incurred, op. cit., n.d.,
