H. Parkes and M. Martineau to Lao Ch'ung-kuang. Acknowledge receipt of cheque for $20,000 and of contract prepared by the Cantonese gentry and the developer Ho-chi. The twelve sub-contractors of Ho-chi signed the contract on 23 July, whereupon they were handed the cheque for $20,000. They then acknowledged receipt of the same amount in writing. This receipt, the contract, as well as the specifications and the two plans prepared by the Chief Engineer of Hong Kong are all triplicated: one copy is enclosed herewith for Lao's reference, the other two will be forwarded to the British and French Plenipotentiaries. It is only fair that Chief Engineer of Hong Kong and his assistants should be rewarded with 3% of the $20,000 and they are hereby paid $600.
