Hsü Kuang-chin to Bonham. Art. 5 of Treaty of Nanking specifies that British merchants may trade with whichever Chinese merchant (shang) they choose. By definition a Chinese shang is a rich person with plenty of property and government licence to trade, such as pawnshop merchant, salt merchant or iron merchant. If Britons are not happy with thirty firms already dealing in cassia bark, other firms may be allowed to engage in trade provided they obtain licences from government to do so.
