1847 Dec 18/TK 27 11 11
Cantonese gentry to J F Davis. Chinese authorities have punished villagers of Huang-chu-ch'i so severely that entire families have deserted their homes for fear of their lives. This is in stark contrast to the extraordinarily lenient treatment of Britons whohad killed Chinese citizens before. If Davis continues to press for severe punishment of more villagers, Cantonese will be even more embittered and Britons may expect more difficult times ahead.
