Ch'i-ying to Davis. Has report from officials investigating attack on Royal Navy officer near Whampoa. On 4 Feb 1846 Royal Navy officer with about ten bluejackets penetrated ten li inland into densely populated villages. Their presence with muskets and pistols caused consternation, especially among women. Villagers gathered and threw stones at them to prevent them from going any further, not with intention to hurt or plunder. No one was injured. Gentry have been told to restrain villagers. Davis must restrain Britons roaming in countryside.
