Pottinger to Huang En-t'ung. Reminds Huang that while negotiating treaty at Nanking, it was made clear that with regard to payment of indemnity, silver taels were to be converted to silver dollars according to commercial standard at Canton, i.e. 710 taels to 1,000 dollars. Assures Huang that if overpaid, excess will be credited to Chinese government but if underpaid, Chinese will have to make up the sum.
