Description

Pottinger to I-liang. Encloses proclamation denouncing massacre of British sailors shipwrecked in Taiwan, and prohibiting British merchants from going to treaty ports of Min-Che until trade regulations are established jointly with Ch'i-ying and I-li-pu. Requests that two letters be forwarded to Intendant Lu Tse-ch'ang and that any letter from Ch'i-ying be forwarded to him. Encl. Proclamation by Pottinger. Only nine of total of two hundred and eighty-three sailors belonging to two British ships wrecked in Taiwan have escaped death by execution or starvation by Taiwan authorities. Is relying on Emperor to take appropriate action in order to forestall revenge by British forces. 27 Nov 1842
