Elliot's revised and expanded terms for truce: (1) as regards payment of indemnity and of debts owed British merchants totalling twelve million dollars, half must be paid within three days while rest should be paid in a year's time, whereupon all territories occupied by British forces except Hong Kong and Chien-sha-tsui [Kowloon] will be returned; (2) previous agreement should stand except cession of Hong Kong should include Chien-sha-tsui; payment of indemnity and debts must be completed within three years, after which Co-hong monopoly must be abolished; in future, privileges granted to other nations must be extended to Britain; disagreements over text of treaty be referred to the English version; (3) Canton must be re-opened for trade within three days.
