Administrative / biographical background

The Royal Niger Company began to encroach on Northern Nigeria from 1886. In 1899 the company's charter was surrendered to the British government and in 1900 became the protectorate of Northern Nigeria. In 1914 the Northern and Southern protectorates were merged to form the colony of Nigeria.
