Description

4 items (formerly filed with Ordnance Office correspondence concerning furnace construction on Saint Nicholas Island (now Drake's Island), Plymouth, Devon) extracted from WO 44/309. Four sheets of plans, elevations and sections showing the construction of a 'shot-heating furnace', based on designs by Captain Melhuish. Reference tables to items (2-3). Scale: (1-3) 1 inch to 1 foot [1:12]; (4) 1 inch to about 2 feet [1:24]. Item (1) signed by Lieutenant Colonel G Hoste, Commanding Royal Engineer, 18 August 1836; and by Colonel [?]Hamble, Commanding Royal Engineer. Item (2) signed by Lieutenant Colonel Hoste, 8 June 1838. Item (3) signed by Lieutenant Colonel Hoste, 9 April 1839; and by Lieutenant J G A Symonds, Royal Engineers, 3 April 1839. Item (4) signed by George Quick, Stonehouse, [?April 1839]. Items (1) [?and (2)] originally accompanied a letter from Lieutenant Colonel Hoste to the Secretary of the Board of Ordnance, 18 August 1838. Item (3) originally accompanied a letter from Lieutenant Colonel Hoste to the Inspector General of Fortifications, 9 April 1839. Item (4) originally accompanied a letter from Mr Quick to the Master General of the Ordnance, 12 April 1839.
