Description

14 items (formerly filed with reports by Lieutenant Colonel J Oldfield, Commanding Royal Engineer) extracted from WO 44/30 (folios 119-132). Upper Canada (now Ontario): Kingston. 14 sheets of maps, plans, elevations and sections of a proposed new arsenal: (1-2) Maps of the environs of Point Frederick and Point Henry, showing the proposed arsenal site and parts of the Cataraqui River and the shore of Lake Ontario; (3) site map; (4) the guard house and porter's lodge; (5-7, 10) storehouses and sheds; (8) offices, workshops and a laboratory; (9) a powder magazine; (11) workmens' cottages; (12) a house for clerks; (13) a storekeeper's house; (14) the wharf. Reference table item (3); Reference note to item (1), by Major Bonnycastle. Scale: (1-2) 1 inch to 400 feet [1:4,800]; (3) 1 inch to 100 feet [1:1,200]; (4, 6-7, 9-10, 14 [elevations and sections]) 1 inch to 10 feet [1:120]; (5, 8, 11-13, 14 [plan]) 1 inch to 20 feet [1:240]. Compass indicators to items (2-3). Item (12) copied from a drawing by Mr Wright, Clerk of Works; items (9-10, 12) all [drawn by] John Soane, Clerk of Works. Item (1) signed by Lieutenant W H Roberts, Royal Engineers, 8 July 1839; items (2-14) signed by Captain G Whitmore, Royal Engineers, 19 March 1841; items (2-3) further signed by Lieutenant Colonel J Oldfield, Commanding Royal Engineer, 1 April 1841. Item (1) originally accompanied a report dated 6 September 1839; items (2-14) originally accompanied a letter dated 1 April 1841.
