Description

3 items (enclosures in Lieutenant Colonel Holloway's letter of 8 March 1833) extracted from WO 44/193. County Durham (now in Tyne and Wear). (1) 'Plan of the Dock on the South Side of the River Wear at Sunderland as now proposed to be constructed'. Compass indicator. Scale-bar added in pencil: 4.5 inches to 600 feet [1:1,600]. (2) 'Sunderland Dock & Port Bill. Section of the Proposed Quay to the Eastward of the Fort'. Shows alterations proposed by Holloway to the design of the River Wear Commissioners. Scale: 4.5 inches to 200 feet. (1) and (2) are copies signed by John Murray, Sunderland, 6 March 1833 and were received from the Commissioners of the River Wear. (3) 'Plan of the Entrance of the Port of Sunderland shewing the Proposed Wet Dock'. Scale: 1 inch to 4 chains [1:3,168]. Compass indicator. Originally drawn by I Brunel, FRS [Fellow of the Royal Society], Engineer. Lithographed by C Ingrey, Strand, London. MS additions show positions of ships in the River Wear when entering/leaving dock, and the resultant clearance/impediment; Sandy Bay 'where ships run on shore after missing the entrance of the Harbour'; intended South Dock. Annotated: 'Received from the Solicitor to the Party opposed to the measure of forming a Dock in the South side of the River.' Dimensions of sheets: (1) 42 cm x 38 cm; (2) 26 cm x 52 cm; (3) 49 cm x 42 cm.
