'T. Yeakell's Sketches about Rye Romney Marsh, Oxney Isles Newenden Appledore &c' (endorsement on wrapper at MPH 1/773/37): wrapper and 37 sheets of maps of areas in Kent (including Bredgar, Doddington, Hollingbourne, Luddenham Level, Meopham, Reading Street, Ringlestone, Rodmersham, Sittingbourne, Small Hythe, Westerham, Wittersham, Wormshill) and Sussex (including Beckley, Guildford, Iden, Northiam, Peasmarsh, Playden, Winchelsea). Scale: 3 inches to 1 mile. A crude compass indicator on MPH 1/773/29 (Rodmersham) suggests that Yeakell worked facing south, to maximise the light on his work. The sheets show various methods of depicting relief, vignettes of churches and windmills, practice calligraphy, mathematical calculations, and evidence of Yeakell's having wiped his pen on the paper before or after working: all point to the conclusion that these are probably Yeakell's original field drawings in preparation for what became the Ordnance Survey maps of Kent and Sussex. Dimensions of sheets: between 46 cm x 52 cm and 12 cm x 27 cm. For other initial sketch maps see MPHH 1/30 and for the untitled, coloured MS [?fair copies] of the topographical survey see MR 1/597, MR 1/598, MR 1/599, MR 1/600.
