Sheet [16] of 'Plan of the Fortress of Malta' (for sheet numbers, see WO 78/2331). Map of the area around Valetta, showing fields, contours, roads, place names, principal buildings, fortifications. Inset plan of the rifle range at St George's Bay. Reference table to colouring (colouring not printed on this map) and to place name elements. Compass star. Surveyed by the Royal Engineers, 1858-1862, under the direction of [E H] Steward, Lt RE, [F H] Rich, Capt RE, [E L] Bland, Capt RE, and [R M] Laffan, Lt Col RE. Zincographed at the Ordnance Survey Office, Southampton, under the superintendence of [R M] Parsons, Capt RE, 1869. The title has been extended in manuscript to read: 'Plan of the Clearance Boundary of the Fortress of Malta'. MS additions by A O Giles, QMSgt RE, 21 February 1882, show the boundary agreed in 1838; ground over which clearance rights were still exercised [in 1882]; ground free from restriction and water reserved for mercantile shipping by Government Resolution of 25 May 1859. Below Giles's signature is written: 'C 287'. Signed by T A L Murray, Col CRE, 24 February 1882, to accompany his letter of that date to the Inspector General of Fortifications. Stamped in the office of the IGF. Further MS notes are dated 12 September 1882 and 11 May 1883. Affixed to the map is an extract from a letter of 1 July 1881 from the CRE Malta: the extract, which relates to the boundaries of land not to be built on, appears to have been made on 10 March 1882 and was stamped in the War Office on 4 October 1884.
The piece which formerly bore map reference MPH 332 (previously WO 78/1387) was itself transferred to MPHH 1/99
