Cornwall: Maker (near Plymouth). 'Project for a Fort on the Heights of Maker ...': showing alternative plans by the Duke of Richmond, Master General of the Ordnance and Colonel [Matthew] Dixon, Commandant of Engineers, superimposed in different colours. Scale: 1 inch to 100 feet. Compass indicator. Stamped: Inspector General of Fortifications; the position of Chief Engineer became the Inspector General of Fortifications and Works by Royal Warrant in 1802. The plan is cited as being 'received 4th April 1783' in the docket books which were the War Office's original means of reference to these maps. The Duke of Richmond was Master General of Ordnance, March 1782-April 1783 and December 1783-January 1795. Colonel Dixon was a Commandant of Engineers, November 1782-1788.
