Description

Cape Colony: Cape Town (now in Cape Province, Republic of South Africa). 5 items. Plans of Craig's Battery. (1) 'Craig's Battery': title sheet. (2) 'N o 1': site plan: showing range of guns. Approximate scale: 1 inch to 880 yards [1:31,680]. (3) '2': top plan of gun emplacements, caretaker's quarters, shell filling room. Scale: 1 inch to 20 feet. (4) '3': plans and sections of gun emplacements, caretaker's quarters and shell filling room. Scales: plan: 1 inch to 10 feet; sections: 1 inch to 10 feet and 1 inch to 5 feet. (5) '4': plan showing position of Craig's Battery and approximate positions of Salt River mouth in 1860-1895. Scale: 1 inch to 200 feet [1:2400]. Compass indicators. Signed by Colonel F W Nixon, Commanding Royal Engineer, South Africa, April-July 1895; (3)-(5) initialled H W C [H W Clark], Superintending Clerk, Royal Engineers, July 1895. Stamped: Commander Royal Engineers, South Africa plan numbers 397-399 and 448 respectively. Dimensions: (1) and (3)-(5) 70 cm x 103 cm; (2) 50 cm x 64 cm.
