Channel Islands. 'Part of the Original Survey of Jersey Island 1787': field sketch maps or 'foul plans' of the Topographical Survey of Jersey, by Gardner et al. (1)-(9) Field sketches: showing field boundaries, roads, woodlands, principal place names, buildings (in red) and survey triangulation bases and lines (in red). (10)-(15) Second set of sketch maps for height detail showing hill hachuring (in black), spot heights (in red), high and low water marks, buildings, vegetation and field boundaries. Scales: 1 inch to 300 yards. Some sheets stamped by the Board of Ordnance. Each sheet is numbered along the edges to facilitate the identification of adjoining sheets. For the MS fair copy of the topographical survey see MR 1/1172; an engraved version with MS colouring and text see MPHH 1/41; the final engraved maps see WO 78/5549. MPH 1/344, MPH 1/462, MPHH 1/235 and MPHH 1/254 are sets of the 4 sheets, at various stages of the engraving process.
