Description

10 items, numbered 1-3, 4a, 4b, 5-9, extracted from FO 371/64. (1) 'Aqaba - Rafah': map consisting of 3 joined sheets, showing the existing Sinai boundary between Egypt and the Ottoman Empire (the 'Marashash-Rafah' line); (the area covered is now in Israel and the Occupied Territories, Egypt, and Jordan). Reference table, in Arabic and English, to roads, wadis, telegraph lines, the nature of the terrain, camps, astronomical stations, and the boundary. Scale: 1:100,000. [Based on an original map drawn by the surveyors attached to the Egyptian Boundary Commissioners; lithographed by the Egyptian Army Survey Department]. MS additions, in coloured pencil, highlighting certain place names. (2) Map covering the same area as item (1). Reference table to the same features as item (1). Scale: 1:400,000. Lithographed by Harrison and Sons, Saint Martin's Lane; printed August 1906. MS additions, in pencil, showing the boundary between Egypt and the Ottoman Empire, as proposed by the Turkish commissioners to Captain [R C R] Owen, [Egyptian Boundary Commissioner]. (4b) A very faded photocopy, scarcely legible in many places, [?]of item (2). Item (4a) is a photocopied reference table to geographical positions marked on item (4b), and to the boundary defined in the Turco-Egyptian agreement of 1 October 1906. (3, 5, 9) 'Map annexed to the Agreement of 1st October 1906': 3 copies of a map covering the same area as items (1-2) and (4b), showing the new boundary line. Reference tables as item (4a),with the additions of telegraph lines. Scale: 1:500,0000. Produced by the Survey Department, Cairo. (6-8) 3 copies of a version of the same map printed in Arabic. Formerly filed with: (1) Mr M de C Findlay's despatch of 11 August 1906; (2) a transcription of Mr Findlay's telegram of 15 September 1906; (3, 4a, 4b, 5-8) Lord Cromer's despatch number 192, 27 October 1906; (9) Lord Cromer's despatch number 199, 15 November 1906.
